Lecture in Olomouc introduced the Kashitu school project to Development Studies students
As part of the Expert Panel series at the Faculty of Science, Palacký University in Olomouc, a specialized lecture focused on the Kashitu Secondary School project in Zambia took place. The event was mainly aimed at students of Development Studies and offered a comprehensive view of the project's implementation within the context of development cooperation.
The main topic was the presentation of the project from technical, social, and educational perspectives. The audience learned about the use of local construction technologies, especially the production and use of unfired bricks, which form the basis of most of the built structures. Emphasis was placed on sustainability, material availability, and adapting the design to local conditions.
However, the lecture went beyond construction itself and presented the project as a broader development initiative. Attention was given to activities supporting the local community, such as a sewing workshop, beekeeping, and carpentry production. These activities contribute not only to economic self-sufficiency but also to the development of practical skills and education in the region.
The final part of the lecture was dedicated to a discussion with students, opening topics such as the importance of development aid, the role of international cooperation, and possibilities for the project's future direction. Students had the opportunity to reflect on broader contexts and share their views on the effectiveness and impact of similar initiatives.
Thus, the lecture offered an inspiring connection between technical building solutions and development activities, highlighting the importance of an interdisciplinary approach when implementing projects in different socioeconomic environments.
