Summer begins with a new mini house, graveling, and termite tracking

31/07/2025

On Saturday evening, our team – Anežka, Vašek, and Eda – arrived safely in Kashitu. After a warm welcome from the local community, they shared dinner and held their first face-to-face conversations about ongoing projects and future plans. Before that, they spent a day in Lusaka to handle logistics and pick up essential materials – like extension cords and other small but necessary construction items.

And because we're always looking for new ways to support both the community and the project as a whole, we also purchased Zambian tea, which we'll soon offer on our e-shop – if we like the taste!

Sunday: Tradition meets fieldwork

Sunday morning began with a traditional harvest mass, an important event in the local calendar. Immediately afterward, we visited the construction site to check on the current progress. All buildings are in good shape – though we found a few termites near last year's family house, so a bit of detective work lies ahead: we need to identify the entry point and block it. It's not just about insects – it's about protecting the timber structure and ensuring the building's long-term durability.

The house is currently occupied by Gregori and Emannuel, who work with the local NGO New Renato – and there's a chance one of us may move in temporarily too, as the atmosphere inside is very welcoming.

Locals build their own house – using our techniques

One of the biggest joys of recent days: a new small house has been built – this time by the local community themselves. The construction is based on the training that people in Kashitu have received over the past few years – and the result speaks for itself. They used our brick type and applied several techniques they learned from us. The house will be used to host visitors from remote areas and clearly shows that our approach – to teach, not just build – really works.

Work on the honey lab continues

On Monday, we resumed work on the honey processing lab, which Honza had started earlier on site. Progress has been a bit slow so far – the first two days were public holidays, so fewer workers showed up. Still, we didn't waste time: we used it to check inventory with the local team and held several meetings to go over plans in detail.

At the same time, brick production continues, and as of Wednesday, we began preparing the concrete slab. Our goal is to complete it by the end of the week so we can move forward with the next phase of construction as soon as possible.
